Great skin doesn’t just come from a magic wand or good genes. It comes from a healthy lifestyle and a good skin care routine, and every good skin care routine begins with a solid cleansing plan. It’s more than a splash and go – cleansing your skin properly will help you maintain the moisture your skin naturally has while enabling the absorption of additional moisturizers and anti-aging products.
Your first step should be to remove your makeup prior to cleansing. Use an oil-based makeup remover, especially if you use concealers or heavier foundation. Then, splash on some lukewarm water and a dime-size dab of cleanser. Use your fingers or a clean, damp washcloth to begin to cleanse.
The cleanser you use depends upon your skin type. All cleansers work to remove dead skin, dirt and any leftover traces of makeup, but drier skin generally wants a milky lotion with minimal foaming action. Every few days, switch it up to include an exfoliating clean. Talk to your cosmetologist to decide whether a salicylic- or glycolic-acid cleanser is a good choice for you with this step, or perhaps a brush is a better bet.
Whatever you decide, steer clear of bar soaps. They tend to have higher pH levels that will allow bacteria to grow. Higher alkaline cleansers are also hard on your skin, stripping out too much of your natural oils. You may feel super clean initially only to have your sebaceous glands kick into high gear to make up for it.
