Studies have shown that nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc as well as vitamins C and E can help ward off age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. That means foods such as green, leafy vegetables, salmon, tuna, eggs, nuts, beans, lentils, and citrus fruit are all good candidates for eye health. Plus, including more of these foods in your diet will also help you maintain a healthy weight and be less prone to obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Interestingly, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults.
Here in paradise, it’s also important to protect your eyes from the sun. Overexposure to ultraviolet rays can make you more prone to cataracts and macular degeneration. Look for sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound styles are great for protecting your eyes from the side, and polarized lenses will reduce glare. And don’t rely upon your contact lenses. While they will reduce some of the UV rays hitting your eyes, they won’t catch all of them. You’ll still need to wear sunglasses for complete protection.
