There’s no doubt about it – a good daily skincare routine is a must to keep your skin looking its best and to prevent and reverse the visible signs of aging. But with all the different products on the market, it’s difficult to choose which ones are important for your skin’s health. Here are a few tips that will help simplify the process:

Good skincare happens twice a day: a cleansing and moisturizing in the morning and a thorough cleansing and infusion of antioxidants, serums, and anti-aging treatments at night.

Know your skin type before selecting products, because your skincare routine will need to address the individual needs of your skin type: dry, normal, oily, or combination skin.

Everyone needs a cleanser. For dry skin, use a moisturizing cleanser, and for oily or combination skin, use a gentle, oil-free wash that balances your pH and doesn’t over-strip your natural oils (this can cause your skin to overproduce oil). A sulfate-free cleanser is appropriate for normal skin.

Your next step is toner, which should also be formulated for your skin type. Avoid products that contain alcohol, which can make dry skin even drier and can over-strip oily skin. Toners are important for hydrating and restoring your skin’s pH balance.

Moisturizing is one of the most important steps, regardless of your skin type. Again, be sure that the products are formulated for your skin’s needs – moisturizers should leave your skin feeling hydrated, not oily. If you have dry skin, your moisturizing step should include special products to hydrate under your eyes, as well as a moisture seal.

Use your cleanser, toner, and moisturizer every morning. At night, use your cleanser and toner, followed by other products like antioxidant serums and restorative/lifting/brightening products, then apply your moisturizer. Never go to bed in makeup – it will clog your pores and prevent your vitamin-infusing and anti-aging products from penetrating your skin to work properly.

Which serums should you use? This varies based on your skin type/condition and any issues you need to address (such as acne, dullness, visible signs of aging or excessive dryness). Everyone can benefit from antioxidant serums, but other products will need to address your individual needs. Talk with a professional skincare consultant about your skin’s condition to determine which serums would be most effective for you.
